Duration: 3 months - 1 year

Field/Area: Social Sciences and Humanities, with a topic related Taiwan, cross-strait relations, Asia-Pacific region and Sinology

Who can apply: 

A. foreign nationals who are professors, associate professors, assistant professors, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, or doctoral program students at related departments of overseas universities, or are research fellows at an equivalent level in academic institutions abroad;

B. candidates recommended by ROC (Taiwan) overseas missions with a field of study on Taiwan's foreign relations or cross-strait relations.

Those who are currently conducting research, teaching, or studying in Taiwan are ineligible.

Field/Area:  Funding is available for research stays in all disciplines at a host institute abroad of one's own choice.

Who can apply: Applications are open to candidates with above-average qualifications who have completed their doctorate with very good results (at least magna cum laude or very good) before starting their fellowship.
Under certain circumstances, persons with foreign citizenship can also be included in the funding measures. Eligible to apply are Germans on an equal footing pursuant to § 8 (1) no. 2ff., (2), (2a) and (3) BAföG. Please submit proof of this with your application.

  • postdocs at German research institutions, especially junior professors or academics in comparable positions (e.g. autonomous heads of junior research groups). They must be at an early stage of their academic activity.
  • Applicants must be in a position of temporary employment for the entire scholarship period or demonstrate that their living expenses are covered by other means. The scholarship cannot be used to cover an applicant’s living expenses or to finance his or her own tenure. Scientists with a permanent tenure are not eligible to apply.

Who can apply: 

1.1. Applicants must have a PhD. Applicants finalising their PhD may apply, provided that their defense/viva takes place no later than 15 February 2026. Confirmation of this date from your university is required before any fellowship award can be confirmed.

1.2. Applicants must be fully available from October 2026 to October 2027. The fellowship cannot begin earlier or later than October, nor can it be concluded prematurely. Selected fellows must arrive during the first week of October 2026.

1.3. Applicants who are currently employed or affiliated with another institution must secure official release from their duties for the full duration of the fellowship. This fellowship may not be held in combination with other fellowships or employment contracts.

1.4. Applicants planning to conduct fieldwork are strongly advised to complete this prior to the start of the fellowship. IIAS does not provide funding for fieldwork activities during the fellowship period.

1.5. Applicants must have a good command of English. The fellowship activities, communication, etc. are conducted in English.

Who can apply: 

  • Have obtained a Ph.D. within the past five years from the start date of the fellowship period, OR
  • Be current Ph.D. candidates scheduled to receive their degree before the start of the fellowship period.
  • Have not been awarded a university position equivalent to or exceeding that of a full-time lecturer, or a senior researcher position at a research institution. 
  • Hold citizenship or permanent residency status in a country outside of Korea.*Applicants who are Korean citizens must have already obtained permanent residency status in a country outside of Korea as of July 2025.
