Asia in Times of Crises and Polarization: Challenges, Processes, and Solutions

Crises, radical changes, and increasing polarization constantly pose new challenges, demand solutions, and lead to new processes. The last year in particular has shown us how quickly and drastically societal orders can change. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has not only led to a worldwide crisis but has also revealed how differently the regions and countries of the world deal with a challenge like this.
This also includes Asia where several countries announced early successes in the fight against the pandemic, while questions of social justice and the further course of the public health crisis remain. The region is furthermore confronted with a variety of other challenges that continue to require answers from actors in politics, economy, and civil society. Researchers focusing on Asia are equally confronted with new challenges – including but not limited to the difficulties of field work during a historic public health crisis. We want to provide you with a forum where you can discuss these challenges, present your work, get insightful feedback, and exchange ideas.
On May 7 (Friday), 8 (Saturday), and 15 (Saturday), 2021 we will hold the 10th conference of the Young Scholars Group with a focus on “Asia in Times of Crises and Polarization: Challenges, Processes, and Solutions”. We will meet virtually via Webex.
The Young Scholars Group organizes this bi-annual conference for master students, PhD students, and postdoctoral students. It provides a platform for presenting and discussing your ongoing research (“work in progress”). Experts comment on the presentations to ensure professional feedback. In addition, you can also look forward to a thought-provoking keynote and to workshops on aspects of academic research. Despite the virtual format, social gatherings and networking within the Young Scholars Group will not be neglected.
Topics may range from politics, law, and economics to social, cultural, and religious issues in the Asian region. You may take contemporary or historical perspectives. If you like to participate, please send an abstract (max. 200 words) via our online registration form until January 31, 2021 (extended until February 10, 2021):
Anmeldung/ Registration: 10. Tagung der NWG
We will inform you about the acceptance of your contribution until the beginning of February. We will subsequently ask all confirmed presenters to submit a paper or detailed abstract (English or German, 5-9 pages incl. research question, methodology, preliminary results) by April 4, 2021.
