Timothy Cheek new GEAS Visiting Professor

From 2 June to 21 June 2014, GEAS will be joined by Prof. Timothy Cheek from the University of British Columbia.

Tim Cheek is Director of the Centre for Chinese Research and Louis Cha Chair in Chinese research at the UBC in Vancouver, Canada. He gained his PhD in History and east Asian Languages from harvard University, and his research interests are Modern China, particularly China’s intellectuals and Chinese Communist Party history. His current projects include contemporary Chinese intellectuals and Chinese thought, writings of Mao Zedong (Yan’an period), and Chinese historiography.
His recent books include: Mao’s Road to Power: Revolutionary Writings, 1912-1949, Vol. VIII, associate editor on this volume (1942-1945.7) of the definitive English edition of Mao’s pre-49 works. Stuart R. Schram, et al, eds. (Armonk, NY: M.E. Sharpe) and A Critical Introduction to Mao, NY: Cambridge University Press, 2010).

Tim cheek will host a seminar, open to PhD and MA students of Chinese Studies on the recent history of China, especially the role of Chinese intellectuals in the twentieth century. The seminar starts on June 4.

On June 16, He will also join Profs. Klaus Mühlhahn, Yeh Wen-hsin, an esteemed former guest of the GEAS, and Prof. Paul Cohen on a roundtable on Understanding Modern China: Historiographical and Theoretical Issues.
