Workshop Qualitative Interviews – Theory and Practice

Outline

This workshop’s focal point is the theory and practice of qualitative Interviews as a well-established and widely utilized method of data collection in qualitative research. A variety of qualitative interview techniques will be discussed and their potential application and challenges considered. Pragmatic and technical issues of generating interview data will also be addressed. Additionally, this workshop engages with the participants’ own interview guides in an effort to further develop them in a practical manner. Topics covered also include documentation, anonymization, and transcription.

Introduction round of participants; basics of qualitative research and methodological potentials and challenges

11:45-1:15 Introduction to Qualitative Interviews

Qualitative interviews: general definition, objectives, potentials and limitations

Lunch break

2:15-3:45 Types of Qualitative Interviews

Specific features of interviews with experts, narrative and problem-centered interviews and their potential applications

4:00-5:30 Types of Questions, Interview Guide Development Part 1

Formulating questions; use of interview guides; initial development of an interview guide (based on a research project from a selected workshop participant)

 

Day 2

Refining one interview guide draft from a selected workshop participant

Reflection on social interactions and avoiding common mistakes

Sampling strategies; recruiting interviewees; recording; documentation and preparing data for analysis

Working with materials of participants

The two sessions on the development of interview guides will be based on documents submitted by participants. Participants are invited to submit an initial list of questions (for initial development of an interview guide) or drafts of interview guides (for refining) by Monday, October 11, 2021.

All documents from participants and the respective discussions are confidential and must not be used outside the workshop except after previous agreement by the authors.
