Urban-Rural Migration in Japan and Europe: Transnational and Comparative Perspectives

Feb 02, 2023 - Feb 03, 2023

The Japanese-German Center Berlin (JDZB) in cooperation with Freie Universität Berlin would like to invite you and your colleagues to the symposium

Urban-Rural Migration in Japan and Europe: Transnational and Comparative Perspectives

on Thursday, February 2, and Friday, February 3, 2023, on-site at the JDZB, Saargemünder Str. 2, 14195 Berlin.

Rural areas often face economic and demographic problems, especially the migration of rural youth to urban centers in many parts of the world. However, over the past decade in Japan, there has been a surprising increase in both the number of people interested in moving from urban to rural areas and the number who actually move. The symposium will address this phenomenon and compare the results of the DFG research project "Urban-Rural Migration and Rural Revitalization in Japan" and other research on Japan with urban-rural migration in Germany and various European countries. The role of transnational mobility on domestic urban-rural migration is also examined. The links between urban-rural migration, local revitalization practices, and global social, political, and economic structures are intensively discussed by scholars from various disciplines and practitioners such as mayors of municipalities and policy advisors.

The symposium is kindly supported by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG – German Research Foundation).

It is organized as an on-site event in compliance with the then prevailing SARS-CoV-2 regulations by the Berlin State government.

The language will be English, for further details please refer to the tentative program on the JDZB website
