May-Britt U. Stumbaum, PhD, directs the NFG Research Group "Asian Perceptions of the EU" at the Freie Universität Berlin. She is also Team Leader for the EU funded "Asia Pacific Research and Advice Network (#APRAN)". Previous positions included Senior Research Fellow and Executive Director of the China and Global Security Programme at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Fritz Thyssen Fellow at WCFIA, Harvard University, Head of the International Forum on Strategic Thinking/Senior Researcher, German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), Head of Asia Department, Berlin Partner and Seminar Leader for the Robert Bosch Foundation. May-Britt U. Stumbaum worked as a Visiting Fellow at renowned think tanks in Europe, China and New Zealand and as a "Scholar in Residence" at the Political Section/EU Delegation to China. She is a co-founder and former president of Women in International Security Deutschland (WIIS.de) and a reserve Major of the German Air force. She serves as President of the Tönissteiner Kreis e.V. and as a full member at the CSCAP EU of the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific (CSCAP).
May-Britt U. Stumbaum graduated with an MSc in European Politics and Governance from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and received her PhD from the Free University of Berlin on "Decision-Making in EU Foreign and Security Policy towards the PR China". Aiming to bridge academia and policy, she has published widely on EU security affairs towards Asia and China, provided studies e.g. to the European Defence Agency (EDA) and the German Ministry of Defence, appears in print and TV such as CNN, Al-Jazeera and N24, testified in 2012 to the US Congress' US-China Economic and Security Committee on EU-China security issues (testimony) and addressed the 2013 Asia Pacific Roundtable and the 2014 Jakarta International Defence Dialogue. She also acts as an Associate Editor to European Geostrategy.

Security policy in Asia-Pacific and US/European security policies towards Asia (particularly India and China); transfer, diffusion and the role of perceptions in EU-Asia Pacific security relations; maritime security; non-traditional security challenges; export controls and peacekeeping; defence industrial issues and dual-use technology.
