This course deals with the dynamic changes of Japan’s relationship with its neighboring countries, with a special focus on its relationship with China. It will start from the restoration of formal diplomatic relationship between Japan and the People’s Republic of China in 1972 and an analysis of the Sino-Japanese economic relationship during the subsequent years. This will be followed by an analysis of Japanese foreign direct investment to East Asia since 1970s, the reorganization of regional economic relationship caused by it, and the rise of Japan’s leadership in East Asian economic integration. The latter half of the course will deal with the changes in East Asian international relations caused by the economic and political emergence of China after 2001. The struggles between the initiatives taken by Japan and China for East Asian economic integration, the erosion of Japan’s technological supremacy in East Asia, the clash of techno-nationalism between Japan and China, and the prospects for East Asian international relations will be discussed.
